Film Review

Writing a good film review is more than simply saying whether you liked a movie or not. A useful review should (0) GIVE readers a clear idea of what to expect, while also explaining why the film succeeds or fails. Reviewers often begin by (1) .......... up the plot in a few sentences, but they should avoid revealing too much. They usually go (2) .......... to comment on the acting, the direction and the music, as these elements all play an important (3) .......... in the viewer’s experience. A strong review also needs to be balanced. Even if a film has obvious weaknesses, it may still have something to (4) .......... to an audience, such as memorable dialogue or impressive visuals. On the other hand, a famous cast does not always (5) .......... for a weak story. In the end, the reviewer should (6) .......... a clear opinion and support it with examples. This helps readers decide whether the film is worth seeing or if they would be better (7) .......... something else instead. When done well, a review can be both informative and entertaining, and may even (8) .......... people to watch a film they had not considered before.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
