Pop Around the World

For many young artists, becoming a global pop star is not simply a matter of talent. It also depends on timing, image and the ability to connect with audiences across cultures. Some singers first build a loyal following online and then (0) BREAK THROUGH when one song suddenly attracts international attention. However, early success does not always lead to a long career. Artists who fail to adapt may quickly fall (1) .......... of fashion, while others manage to stay relevant by experimenting with new sounds. Record companies also play a major (2) .......... in shaping an artist’s public identity, from choosing singles to planning world tours. At the same time, social media has made it easier for fans to keep (3) .......... with every new release, performance or interview. This close contact can strengthen loyalty, but it also places stars under constant pressure. A single mistake may be blown (4) .......... of proportion within hours. Even so, the most successful performers usually have more than catchy songs. They often show real determination, work hard behind the scenes and take criticism (5) .......... board. In the end, lasting success usually comes down (6) .......... a mix of skill, discipline and luck. Without that balance, even a brilliant career can fade (7) .......... quickly as it began, and the artist may struggle to live (8) .......... huge expectations.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
