Indefinite Pronouns in Context

People often think indefinite pronouns are easy because they appear in everyday English. However, learners can still make mistakes when they have to choose the right word in context. For example, if you walk into a room and there is (0) NOBODY there, you might say the place feels strangely quiet. In conversation, we use words like these to talk about people, things and places without being exact. If (1) .......... calls while I’m out, please take a message. If there is (2) .......... you don’t understand, ask the teacher to explain it again. On the other hand, if (3) .......... in the class knows the answer, the lesson may stop for a moment. Teachers also remind students that there is (4) .......... wrong with making mistakes, because errors are part of learning. In a busy school, you can usually find students (5) .........., from the library to the sports hall. Yet on some days there is (6) .......... quiet to study, especially during lunch break. When a project goes well, (7) .......... in the group may feel proud of the result. But if (8) .......... is done on time, the whole plan can fail.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
