Cultural Diplomacy

Governments have long used art, music and education as tools of international communication. Today, this approach is often known as cultural diplomacy, and many countries invest in it because they believe it can (0) BUILD trust more effectively than formal speeches alone. When students study abroad or musicians perform overseas, they often come (1) .......... contact with people whose daily lives are very different from their own. These exchanges can help break (2) .......... stereotypes and encourage curiosity rather than suspicion. In some cases, cultural programmes also pave the (3) .......... for political cooperation by creating a more positive atmosphere. Of course, cultural diplomacy is not a magic solution. It cannot immediately bring (4) .......... peace where there is serious conflict. However, it may still have a lasting (5) .......... on how nations see one another. A successful exhibition, film festival or language programme can leave a strong (6) .......... and make future dialogue easier. For this reason, experts often argue that cultural links should be thought (7) .......... as a long-term investment. Even when governments disagree, artists, teachers and students can keep communication (8) .......... and remind people of their shared humanity.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
