Owning Your Actions

In an age when it is easy to blame circumstances, bad luck or other people, the value of personal responsibility should not be (0) TAKEN lightly. At its core, personal responsibility means accepting that our choices have consequences and that we must answer (1) .......... them. This applies not only to major life decisions, but also to everyday habits that gradually shape our future. People who take responsibility are more likely to learn (2) .......... their mistakes rather than repeat them or make excuses. In professional life, employers tend to think highly of those who carry (3) .......... their duties reliably and admit when they have made an error. In personal relationships, responsibility helps to build trust, since people know they can rely (4) .......... someone who keeps their word. By contrast, those who constantly shift the blame rarely gain the respect of others. Of course, taking responsibility does not mean being harsh on oneself. Rather, it involves being honest, making amends where necessary and trying to act with greater care in the future. In the long (5) .........., this attitude strengthens character and encourages independence. It also allows people to take control (6) .......... their lives instead of feeling powerless. For this reason, personal responsibility should be seen not as a burden, but as a chance to grow, improve and live according (7) .......... one's values. Few qualities have such a lasting impact (8) .......... both personal success and the well-being of society.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
