The Pamir Highlands

Often referred to as the "Roof of the World", the Pamir mountain region has long captured the imagination of travellers, scientists and historians alike. Lying at the (0) HEART of Central Asia, it forms a dramatic meeting point of towering ranges, remote valleys and high plateaus. For centuries, the area remained largely cut (1) .......... from the outside world, partly because of its extreme climate and partly because of the difficulty of crossing such rugged terrain. Even today, many communities there continue to rely (2) .......... traditions that have changed very little over time. What makes the Pamirs especially remarkable is not only their scale but also their cultural richness. The region is home to several ethnic groups, each with customs that have been passed (3) .......... through generations. In recent years, however, tourism has begun to make its (4) .......... felt, bringing both opportunities and challenges. While improved roads have made some villages more accessible, they have also raised concerns about the long-term impact of outside influence. Despite these changes, the Pamirs still offer a rare sense of isolation. Visitors often speak of being struck (5) .......... the silence, the clarity of the air and the sheer vastness of the landscape. For many, the experience amounts (6) .......... far more than a physical journey; it becomes a chance to reflect on how small human life can seem beside nature on such a grand (7) ........... It is this combination of beauty, hardship and remoteness that sets the Pamirs (8) .......... from almost anywhere else on Earth.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
