The AI Debate

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most discussed issues of recent years. For some, it promises efficiency, creativity and progress; for others, it raises concerns that are too serious to (0) IGNORE. The central problem is not simply that machines are becoming more capable, but that society has struggled to keep (1) .......... with the speed of change. New tools are being adopted on a massive scale, often before governments, schools and businesses have had time to work (2) .......... clear rules for their use. Supporters point to the many tasks AI can carry (3) .......... more quickly than humans, from analysing data to translating texts. Critics, however, warn that such advantages may come at a cost. Jobs may disappear, misinformation may spread more easily, and people may grow too dependent (4) .......... systems they do not fully understand. Another issue is responsibility: when an AI system causes harm, it is not always obvious who should be held (5) .......... . What makes the debate especially difficult is that opinions tend to be shaped by fear or excitement rather than careful thought. If society is to benefit from AI without losing control, it must strike a fair (6) .......... between innovation and caution. That will depend not only on technical expertise, but also on the willingness to think (7) .......... the immediate convenience these systems offer and consider their long-term effects. In short, the AI problem cannot be solved by technology (8) ..........; it also requires judgment.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
