Multilingual Offices

Modern companies often celebrate linguistic diversity, and with good reason: teams made up of people from different countries can bring fresh perspectives and a wider range of skills. Yet multilingual workplaces also present challenges that are easy to (0) OVERLOOK. Even when employees share a high level of professional expertise, misunderstandings can (1) .......... from small differences in tone, register or cultural expectation. A comment intended as efficient may come (2) .......... as rude, while a carefully worded suggestion may be mistaken for hesitation. In fast-moving meetings, staff who are less confident in the company’s main language may struggle to (3) .......... in, even when they have valuable ideas to contribute. Managers therefore need to create an environment in which people feel comfortable asking for clarification rather than simply (4) .......... along. Written communication can be equally problematic: idioms, abbreviations and vague instructions may (5) .......... confusion instead of saving time. For this reason, successful international firms tend to rely on clear procedures and encourage employees to check meaning rather than take it for (6) ........... Over time, teams that learn to discuss language openly often build stronger trust and become better (7) .......... to working across cultures. In the end, the goal is not to remove every difference, but to ensure that diversity becomes an advantage rather than a (8) .......... of friction.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
