Celebrity Influence

Celebrities have long played a powerful role in shaping the attitudes and behaviour of young people. Through social media, interviews and advertising campaigns, famous figures can reach millions of followers and often have a direct (0) IMPACT on the choices they make. Some teenagers copy the clothes their idols wear, while others are influenced by the opinions they express or the lifestyles they (1) .......... online. This can be harmless, but it may also lead young people to measure themselves (2) .......... unrealistic standards. One reason for this influence is that celebrities are often seen as role models. When a singer or actor speaks out about a social issue, young fans may (3) .......... up that view without questioning it. In the same way, when influencers promote products, their followers may be more likely to (4) .......... into buying them, even if they do not need them. As a result, young people can find it difficult to tell the (5) .......... between genuine advice and carefully planned marketing. That said, celebrity influence is not always negative. Some public figures use their platform to raise awareness, encourage kindness and (6) .......... an example for others to follow. The real challenge lies in helping young people develop the confidence to think for themselves rather than simply (7) .......... after every trend. If they learn to question what they see, they will be less likely to fall (8) .......... the pressure created by fame and image.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
