Changing Habits

Psychologists have long been interested in why some habits are so difficult to change. Although people often believe that breaking a bad habit simply requires willpower, research suggests the process is far more (0) COMPLEX. Habits are formed when behaviours become linked to particular cues and rewards, so they can operate almost automatically. This is why people may (1) .......... themselves reaching for their phone whenever they feel bored, even if they had intended not to. Experts point (2) .......... that lasting change usually depends on understanding the context in which a habit occurs. Rather than trying to eliminate a behaviour completely, it is often more effective to replace it with an alternative that serves a similar purpose. Someone trying to stop eating unhealthy snacks, for instance, may stand a better (3) .......... of success if they prepare healthier food in advance. Another important factor is consistency. Small actions, repeated daily, can (4) .......... into powerful routines over time. For this reason, people are often advised to set (5) .......... goals instead of unrealistic ones. Progress may be slow, but even minor improvements can build confidence and help new behaviours (6) .......... root. In the end, habit change is rarely a matter of sudden transformation. More often, it (7) .......... from patience, self-awareness and a willingness to learn from failure rather than be discouraged (8) .......... it.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
