Smart Farming

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in modern agriculture, and many farmers now rely on digital tools to improve efficiency and reduce waste. From satellite images to automated irrigation systems, innovation is helping the industry deal with rising costs and unpredictable weather. In the past, farming often depended largely on experience and instinct, but today many decisions are based (0) ON data. For example, sensors placed in fields can provide farmers with detailed information (1) .......... soil conditions, allowing them to respond quickly to changes in moisture or temperature. This can lead (2) .......... better crop management and more efficient use of water. Drones are also becoming common, as they are capable (3) .......... monitoring large areas of land in a short time. As a result, farmers can identify problems early and take action before they develop (4) .......... serious threats. However, the spread of agricultural technology is not without challenges. The cost of advanced equipment may be beyond the (5) .......... of smaller farms, and some workers may need training to adapt to new systems. Even so, many experts believe that such investment will pay (6) .......... in the long term. In fact, if used wisely, technology could bring (7) .......... a major transformation in food production and help farmers cope (8) .......... future demands.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
