Business Trust

In business, trust is often described as an invisible asset, yet its effects are anything but abstract. Companies may have impressive products and ambitious targets, but without trust they rarely manage to build relationships that (0) LAST. Clients are far more likely to remain loyal when they believe a firm will act in good faith and follow (1) .......... on its promises. Internally, trust matters just as much. Employees who feel respected are more willing to (2) .......... responsibility, share ideas and admit mistakes before they become serious problems. In contrast, a workplace shaped by suspicion tends to (3) .......... collaboration and encourage people to protect themselves rather than support one another. Trust is not created by slogans; it is built through consistent behaviour over time. A manager who listens carefully, communicates clearly and deals (4) .......... problems fairly is far more likely to earn confidence than one who relies on authority alone. Similarly, business partners need to be open about risks, expectations and limits. If one side fails to honour an agreement, the damage can (5) .......... beyond a single project and affect future opportunities. For this reason, successful organisations do not treat trust as a vague ideal. They see it as something to invest in, protect and never take (6) ........... In competitive markets, reputation can be hard to establish and surprisingly easy to (7) .......... . Once confidence has been lost, rebuilding it is possible, but it usually (8) .......... far more time and effort than maintaining it in the first place.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
