Changing Work Patterns

For decades, automation was mainly associated with factory robots, but its influence now extends far (0) BEYOND the production line. In offices, warehouses and even creative industries, software is beginning to (1) .......... tasks once carried out by people. As a result, employment patterns are shifting in ways that are not always easy to predict. Some analysts argue that automation will lead to large-scale job losses, while others point (2) .......... that new technologies also create fresh opportunities. History suggests that although certain roles disappear, others emerge to take their place. The difficulty lies in the speed of the transition, as workers may struggle to adapt quickly enough to remain (3) .......... in a changing labour market. Employers are therefore placing increasing (4) .......... on transferable skills such as problem-solving, communication and adaptability. These qualities are less likely to be replaced by machines and may help employees move (5) .......... one sector to another. Governments, too, have a role to play, particularly in ensuring that retraining programmes are widely available and financially (6) .......... to those who need them. Ultimately, the impact of automation will depend not only on the technology itself, but also on how societies respond (7) .......... it. If managed well, automation could improve productivity without leaving large sections of the workforce (8) .......... behind.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
