Television's Reach

Few inventions have had quite such a far-reaching (0) IMPACT on modern society as television. For decades, it has been praised for bringing information and entertainment into people’s homes, yet also criticised for shaping public opinion in ways that are not always easy to detect. Its influence does not merely (1) .......... in the programmes it broadcasts, but also in the habits it fosters: families arranging evenings around schedules, politicians tailoring speeches for the camera, and advertisers competing to (2) .......... viewers’ attention. Television has long been credited with broadening horizons by exposing audiences to distant cultures and unfamiliar ideas. At the same time, critics (3) .......... that constant exposure to simplified narratives can flatten complex issues into easily digestible slogans. News coverage, in particular, has the power to (4) .......... public debate, sometimes illuminating neglected matters, but just as often reducing serious discussion to spectacle. Even now, in an age dominated by streaming and social media, television retains a peculiar authority. Events shown live on screen still (5) .......... a sense of collective experience that few other media can match. Whether this strengthens social cohesion or merely creates the (6) .......... of unity is open to question. What is beyond dispute, however, is that television has never simply reflected society; it has also helped to (7) .......... it, leaving values, aspirations and anxieties subtly (8) .......... into everyday life.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
