Healthcare Innovation

For all the enthusiasm that surrounds technological progress, innovation in healthcare systems is not simply a matter of introducing new devices and expecting standards to improve overnight. Digital records, remote consultations and predictive tools can undoubtedly enhance efficiency, but only if they are integrated into existing practice with care. Hospitals that rush to adopt new systems without proper training may find that staff struggle to adapt, and the promised benefits fail to (1) .......... . Much depends on whether innovation is designed to support professionals rather than merely add to their workload. A tool may look impressive on paper, yet prove of little practical (2) .......... if it slows decision-making or duplicates tasks already performed well by experienced clinicians. Equally, policymakers must be wary of assuming that what works in one setting can be transferred wholesale to another, since local conditions often (3) .......... on the success of reform. Even so, it would be short-sighted to dismiss innovation altogether. In many cases, it has helped healthcare systems (4) .......... up with rising demand, broaden access to specialist advice and improve patient monitoring. The real challenge lies in ensuring that progress is not judged solely by novelty, but by whether it (5) .......... tangible improvements in care. If new approaches are to take (6) .........., they must win the confidence of both staff and patients. That, in turn, calls for investment, patience and a willingness to learn from results rather than simply press (7) .......... regardless. Only then can innovation serve not as a fashionable slogan, but as a genuinely effective (8) .......... for lasting reform.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
