Personal Branding

In an age in which professional opportunities are increasingly shaped by online visibility, personal branding is often presented as an optional extra. In reality, it has become a crucial way of signalling competence, values and direction. A strong personal brand does not require constant self-promotion; rather, it depends (0) HEAVILY on consistency. People tend to trust those whose public image (1) .......... with their actions over time, and this trust can open doors that qualifications alone may not. That said, personal branding is frequently misunderstood. Some assume it consists merely (2) .......... polishing a profile or adopting fashionable opinions. Yet the most effective brands are rooted in genuine expertise and a clear sense of purpose. Professionals who try to imitate others may attract attention in the short term, but they rarely succeed in standing (3) .......... in a meaningful way. A well-developed brand can also prove invaluable when circumstances change. In competitive sectors, employers often look not only at what candidates have done, but at what they are likely to contribute in future. A coherent reputation helps to (4) .......... that uncertainty. It gives employers, clients and collaborators a framework through which to interpret achievements. Ultimately, personal branding is less about image than about credibility. If handled thoughtfully, it can (5) .......... distinctions between ambition and vanity, allowing individuals to present themselves with confidence without appearing contrived. It enables individuals to bring their strengths to the (7) .......... and to remain visible in environments where talent alone may otherwise go unnoticed. In the long run, those who neglect it may find themselves at a distinct (8) .........., however capable they are.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
