Digital Privacy

Few would now dispute that the (0) RISE of digital technology has transformed privacy from a largely personal concern into a matter of public debate. In earlier decades, most people could go about their daily lives without leaving a detailed electronic trail. Today, however, routine activities such as shopping online, using navigation apps or even simply carrying a smartphone may (1) .......... vast quantities of personal data. Much of this information is gathered in the (2) .......... of convenience, security or commercial efficiency, and many users surrender it without fully grasping the long-term implications. The difficulty lies not only in the amount of data collected, but also in the way separate fragments can be (3) .......... together to produce an astonishingly complete picture of an individual's habits, preferences and movements. Companies insist that such practices allow them to tailor services more precisely, while governments argue that surveillance powers are sometimes necessary in the (4) .......... of public safety. Critics, however, warn that rights once surrendered are rarely regained without a struggle. What is more, legislation often struggles to keep (5) .......... with innovation, leaving grey areas in which accountability is blurred. Privacy, once lost by degrees, is seldom recovered in full, and that is why the issue continues to (8) .......... such urgent attention.

What to do

In this part, you read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.

Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading.

Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.

If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.

Usually the correct option will be part of a fixed phrase or collocation, a phrasal verb, a connector or the only word that fits grammatically in the gap.

Strategy

  1. Read the title and the whole text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
  2. Check the words before and after the gap.
  3. Choose the best option.
  4. When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
